Road Show set for this weekend

A spin-off from the popular Road Show that travelled from Somerset to St. George's in the 70s and 80s is set to go off tomorrow.

Gina Spence Productions in Christ (GSPIC) Road Show 'A Figure of Speech' will take place on Court Street and the rain venue will be at the Heritage Worship Centre.

The event is a partnership between GSPIC and the May 24 Marathon Derby committee.

The aim is to highlight and celebrate the rich history of the Derby and pay tribute to the pioneers of the race. It will also bring together performing arts from the community, schools, churches and youth agencies.

Mrs. Spence Farmer said she aimed to bring back good wholesome family entertainment by showcasing Bermuda's youth and home-grown talent.

"'A figure of Speech' features an all Bermudian cast ranging from ten to 40-years-old," she said. "The musical play takes a look at the 'good 'ole days,' old time sayings, and how back in the day Bermudian families stuck together through thick and thin.

"The musical features scenes on forgiveness, the hopelessness of addiction and the power of recovery, youth violence, education, road fatalities, talk show and the church."

The lead character is Grandma Hansey from Cedar Hill who believes "if you spare the rod you spoil the child and manners is due to a dog".

"She encourages the youth to honour and respect their elders and learn to love and respect one another," Mrs. Spence Farmer said.

"Her granddaughter Tracy has not forgiven her mom Karen for leaving her with her grandparents when she was a baby. Tracy hasn't spoken to her mom in ten years.

"Karen was caught up living in the streets and became a drug addict, but eventually got her life together. Grandma Hansey is determined to bring her family together and tries to teach Tracy about forgiveness and the importance of family.

"Grandma Hansey talks to the youth about the importance of getting a good education she warns them about the serious consequences of senseless crime, reckless riding and how drugs will eventually lead them down the road of destruction and in some cases even death."

The cast will take people through a musical journey dancing singing and telling the stories, many from old school to new school, guest appearances by United Dance Productions, Nicole Francis a.k.a. "Lady Tyson", Fire Kid, Pastor Eldridge Burrows, New Creation Youth Praise and Worship team, Bermuda Teen Idol Candace Furbert, PRIDE performance team, along with GSPIC road show cast and crew.

"'A Figure of Speech' it's about you, it's about me, and it's about the Bermudian family," said Mrs Spence Farmer.
