Soca Fest '98 at Dockyard to feature Xtatik
Music fans disappointed by last weekend's concert washout will be able to satisfy their soca addiction during the Cup Match holiday.
Headliners Xtatik along with Iwer George, Wayne (Bud) Ramsey and Ansiem Douglas will be performing at "Soca Fest 98'' at Snorkel Beach at Dockyard tomorrow.
And US-based promoters Phaze One said the stars will be putting on a show "bringing Trinidad to Bermuda''.
Trinidadian group Xtatik and lead singer/songwriter Machel Montano are perhaps best known for this year's soca hits "Footsteps'' and "Toro Toro'' as well as last year's Trinidadian Carnival Road March song "Big Truck''.
Mr. Montano, 23, has been singing since he was seven years old and last year became Trinidad and Tobago's youngest Road March King.
Mr. Montano and Xtatik spent the past seven years "on a hectic mission to modernise calypso'', and are well-known for fusing soca with other music genres -- creating hits such as the 1996 soca-house song "Come Dig It''.
Promoters said Mr. Montano and Xtatik have helped generate an international following for soca music, and cited their recent concert in Germany which between 15,000 and 20,000 people.
And they said they expected to draw at least 4,000 people to tomorrow night's show at Snorkel Beach.
Performer Iwer George is expected to perform his popular song "Ah Reading (Show Me Your Hands, I Want to Read Your Palm)'' and newcomer Wayne (Bud) Ramsey will sing "Musical Whip''.
Phaze One spokespeople said that all performers will be visiting Cup Match and will be available for autographs.
And the promoters yesterday emphasised that they did not want this show or any upcoming concerts to cause any conflict and said they intended to work "hand-in-hand'' with local promoters.
Partial proceeds from tomorrow night's show will go to a local children's charity.
Gates open at 7.30 and show time is at 9 p.m. Tickets are $45 in advance and $55 at the gate and can be purchased at Jamaican Grill, Smugglers Reef, Twenty Seventh Century Boutique and Music World.
