Test of strength –for bodybuilders

For some athletes, tomorrow night will mark the culmination of years and years of training, dieting, running, lifting, spinning, and doing laps around various local parks and pools.

The 22nd annual Bermuda Night of Champions has been rescheduled from tonight to tomorrow night and will go down at the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium and 20 plus fitness professionals will compete for honours in seven categories.

Categories for the 2009 event include: women's figure fitness, women's fitness, men's fitness (new class this year), men's classic bodybuilding (new class), women's bodybuilding, men's bodybuilding, and men's masters.

This event, sanctioned by the Bermuda Bodybuilding Federation, is the signature fitness event on the Bermuda calendar, and promises to be every bit as compelling as any similar event broadcast on ESPN.

With perennial favourites like professional trainer and former Mr. Bermuda Ross Caesar, former Mr. Bermuda Jeftha Miller, former figure fitness champion Renae Flood, and former women's bodybuilding champion Susan Rebello all returning to flex and flaunt their considerable muscle, this show will certainly be explosive.

Health and fitness professional and co-owner of the Sea View Gym, Melonie Derosa describes the rigors of being selected to grace the stage at these shows like this: "This is one of the most demanding sports there is.

"It consumes your whole life. Your meals, rest and workout revolve around this sport. You can't just decide you're going to do a competition a month before a show. You really want to be training for the whole year to do well."

Melonie Derosa points to the need to combine training with diet to get that flawless form. "It comes down to a science when you are fine tuning the body during the last few weeks leading up to the show. Your meals have to be geared to your particular body type," she said.

Tickets for this event are $50 and are still available at sSeaview Ultimate Fitness Club, Magnum Power Force Gym, the Athletic Club, the Olympic Club, and the International Sports Shop.
