'This is a big deal for me'
As a child, reggae artist Giles (Dudley) Spurling would often be sent out of class for singing.
Nowadays, at 27, his music might take him to the head of the class.
Dudley is rapidly making a name for himself locally and abroad.
His song, 'Bermudian Gal' was a hit for a long time on Hott 107.5, and now one of his songs will be featured on a Caribbean music compilation 'Love the Music'.
"This is a big deal for me," said Dudley. "I have always written and sung songs since I was 16. I am 27 now.
"This is the first time I have been invited to sing on an album. I have eight songs and I have a new one that I have just finished."
The project is produced by the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) and independent music label, Ryff Music.
The project features vibrant music that represents the best of the Caribbean culture presented by artist from CTO member countries.
The compilation project promotes aspects of Caribbean culture through music and spoken word.
"Two years ago I recorded a song called 'Life'," said Dudley. "I found Ryff Music on the Internet. They are based in Atlanta, Georgia. I sent them my song and they really liked it."
November of last year, they asked Dudley if he would like to take part in the CTO compilation.
"They are making this album to feature Caribbean music," he said. "Bermuda is not in the Caribbean, but most people assume it is."
The CD will be made available in stores and online in June during Caribbean Heritage Month.
Portions of the proceeds from the CD sales will go to support the CTO Foundation.
The CD includes a respected roster of the Caribbean's best artist including: Kevin Lyttle (St. Vincent & The Grenadines) whose hit song 'Turn Me On' reached #4 on the American charts and #2 on the British charts.
Other artists include Dollarman of Grenada, Singing Melody (Jamaica), Natural Black, Kamau Georges (British Virgin Islands) and many others.
The album will include a song by Dudley called 'Experience'.
"I am going to New York for the promotion of the album," said Dudley. "As part of the promotion we have to perform in the City and do promotional activities such as radio interviews and things like that."
He started writing music as a teenager.
"Around the age of 15 or 16 I enjoyed reggae so much I thought let me try and write a song," he said. "I had a decent voice.
"I was thrown out of class for singing at Saltus Secondary School.
"I used to be in the back corner at Saltus. A hobby developed. I started writing a song. My friends thought it was cool. I kept pursuing."
He went on to attend the College of William & Mary in Virginia, where he studied business. He graduated in 2006.
"I came back to Bermuda and got a job and got back on track with the music," he said.
He currently works full-time with Validus Reinsurance as an assistant underwriter.
'Bermudian Gal' became a big hit, locally, in 2007 on Hott 107.5 .
"It was about Bermuda and it was a pretty good song," said Dudley modestly. "It was funny because I live in St. George's. I was in the Bermuda Regiment at that time and I would drive from St. George's to the Regiment and hear the song playing on the radio."
Now he has a new song playing on Hott 107.5 called 'One Life'.
Ryff Music wants to work with Dudley to produce an album in the United States.
