The Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) was established eight years ago and has now seen about 6,200 people.

The figures are contained in the EAP Chairman's Report for 1995, delivered yesterday at the annual general meeting, held at the Elbow Beach Hotel.

It shows that 140 organisations are now EAP members -- representing 12,000 employees -- with membership growing 20 percent over the last 12 months.

And it also shows employees most commonly seek help for emotional problems -- which account for almost a quarter of problems tackled -- and marital or relationship problems.

The EAP helps to provide a range of services such as programmes in AIDS in the workplace, violence in the workplace, stress workshops and a 24-hour on-call service.

A fitness programme was also put into place and taken up by companies including Johnson and Higgins, Trimingham's, Belco, the Bermuda Police and Government.

Belco also took up the Drug Free Workplace initiative, as did the Public Transportation Board, the Rosedon Guest House, Watlington Waterworks and Bermuda Glass Co.

Projects for the next 12 months will include a series on violence in the workplace, parenting seminars and a series on training the trainer.

Guest speaker at the meeting was Ms Jean Jones, a human relations consultant from America, who spoke to the audience on "Finding the Balance''.

The talk was aimed at giving people ideas on how to get the best out of themselves as well as their staff and included such areas listening to others, taking life seriously, keeping a sense of humour, and giving.
