Winchell resigns as Aquarium's top man
Now Richard Winchell will pursue a career in the private sector after having helmed the BAMZ since 1980.
Details of his next position were not released and he could not be reached for comment yesterday afternoon.
During the past 19 years, the aquarium has undergone major growth and development and earned accreditation from the American Zoo and Aquarium Association.
Numerous exhibits have been opened under Mr. Winchell's watch, including the award-winning North Rock exhibit, the Australasia exhibit and Local Tails.
Significant strides were also made in the development of educational and conservation programmes with Mr. Winchell instrumental in creating an endowment for education and promoting the Bermuda Biodiversity Project.
Mr. Winchell said he was confident that there would be a smooth transition as he turned the reins over to his yet-to-be-appointed successor.
He added that he had no doubts that the highly motivated and dedicated BAMZ staff would continue to serve the community in achieving the aquarium's mission to inspire an appreciation and care of Island environments.
"We at BAMZ have been successful because of the community support and widespread participation,'' said Mr. Winchell.
"The dedicated efforts of staff and volunteers, support from international and local businesses, and our Bermuda Zoological Society membership have created the aquarium, museum and zoo that we see and enjoy today.
"The most satisfying experience of my life has been the opportunity to serve the aquarium and Zoological Society.''
