Apollo star Larrita wins Singing for Success
Five contestants vied for the top spot during the Singing for Success Part II showcase on Sunday night.
But only one winner could emerge and she was a former Bermuda Idol 2007 winner and also the seven-time victor of Amateur Night at the Apollo, Larrita Adderley.
Like all the contenders, she sang three pieces for the event, one jazz standard, an 80s hit and a song of her own choosing.
On her second song "Don't Rush Me," the singer didn't realise that there was a hiccup with the sound and finished her piece to the audience screaming for them to allow her the chance to sing her song with the correct sound.
Host Dedre N. Tate announced that the judges, George Huff, Deborah J. McDuffie and Gabrielle Goodman, had also made a similar suggestion and she was allowed to return to the stage to perform.
In the end as all the contenders, Lauren Easton, Ryan Bean, Miss Adderley, Maurita Richardson and Jonae Smith, nervously stood on the stage waiting to see who had won the Berklee College of Music scholarship, Miss Adderley was clearly surprised that she had been victorious.
The night began with a choir of both the contestants and those who had been unsuccessful during the auditions singing the Singing For Success tune.
All the performances, which also included Reggae Gospel singer Septimus, American Idol finalist George Huff, Ms McDuffie and Ms Goodman, were backed by The Wall Street Band and The Calibre Horns.
All singers were also backed by mother and daughter Sheila and Dawn Smith and Tauria Raynor.
Some of the highlights included Mr. Bean's rendition of "It's Friday Night (Just Got Paid)," while Miss Adderley's performance of "Fever," whilst donned in a blonde wig, inspired audience members.
When she performed "I'm Changing" she gave me goose bumps and brought the house to the floor with screams that continued long after she had left the stage.
Miss Easton, 16, brought squeals from the audience with her rendition of "Feelin' Good."
Miss Richardson, who unfortunately lost her voice for the competition, performed "She Worked Hard For The Money" and made an excellent attempt at "Never Felt This Way."
While Miss Smith's "Oh, I Want to Dance With Somebody" and "Falling In and Out of Love With You," reminded the audience of a bygone era.
Septimus bounced across the floor with several of his Reggae Gospel hits, one of which was "Mama, I Love You."
George Huff showed his range and fun during "A House Is Not a Home," as the judges reached their decision.
Back up singer Sheila Smith soloed with a rendition of "Through The Fire."
At times throughout the night the accompaniment was sometimes louder than the performers, but all in all it was excellent.
All of the current contestants and three of the past contenders took part the final song entitled Miracles, which was written by Miss Adderley.
All in all, the Singing For Success Part II was as it was meant to be – a success.
Look out for Acting for Success in October 20 and the performance at the Apollo Theatre in New York City on November 9.
