Coming to a community classroom near you

Salsa dancing is taught at the community schools

The Community Education and Development Programme offers something for everyone. Many classes are free and seniors, aged 65 and over, pay nothing except for computer classes. Primary, middle and senior school students pay a nominal fee.

In the eastern area community schools, courses take place from Monday to Sunday.

Cooking classes include cake decorating, vegetarian and Caribbean cooking, Asian fusion, Indian and Thai cuisine. Classes for home improvement and crafts enthusiasts include furniture upholstery, tiling, ceramics, landscaping, carpentry for women and quilting.

There is also circuit training, golf, dancercise, strength training, aerobics and kickboxing, yoga, tai chi chuan, beginners' ballroom dancing, self-defence, archery, and tennis.

Seniors can choose to bowl or take yoga classes for free. Language classes include French, Spanish or even sign language and for job hunters there is training in restaurant service and tour guiding. Customs clearance and customer service are also available.

In the central area community schools, classes take place from Monday to Saturday.

Dance lovers can choose from Cuban salsa, rueda, and Argentine tango, as well as dancercise and dance fusion workouts.

For those with an interest in African culture, there are classes in drumming, Afro-Cuban percussion, dancing (all levels) and cooking.

There are Portuguese, vegetarian and sushi cooking classes as well as courses in entrepreneurship, accounting for non-accountants, investing, accounting and debt-free living.

Keep-fit and sports classes include tai chi chuan, weight conditioning, tennis and squash. People wanting to learn about their family trees can take genealogy classes.

Classes are offered in German, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese, while those from overseas can take English language classes. Construction workers can learn more about taking a pro-active role in safer worksites by attending the free occupational health and safety seminar.

For parents, a course on an asset approach to youth development offers guidance on raising successful young people, while the free Blue Flag certification course is available for people involved in relating Bermuda history, geography and current affairs to visitors.

In the Western area community schools, courses run from Monday to Saturday.

Cooking classes include French cooking, cooking around the world with international wines, sushi, gourmet meals, healthy cooking, Caribbean and Indian as well as baking and cake decorating.

There are classes in anger management and conflict resolution, care techniques for nails and natural hair and caring for seniors in their own home/understanding the ageing process.

Sports and fitness include African dance, women's slimnastics, introduction to boxing training, jazzercise, yoga. tai chi chuan, ballroom dancing, salsa and tennis.

There are also courses in electricity, plumbing, Customs clearance, computer repairs/maintenance tips, outboard engine service/maintenance, and corporate image communication and behaviour.

French, Portuguese and Spanish classes are available as well as English for foreign language speakers.

There are special courses Just for Youth from Monday to Sunday at locations including the St. George's Youth Centre, Clearwater Middle School, Sabor Dance School, T.N.Tatem Middle School, St. George's Preparatory School field and the old Berkeley Institute.

Sports include basketball, bowling, girls' fitness, golf, tennis, cricket, gymnastics, badminton, netball, martial arts, and soccer.

Arts and foreign languages classes include African dance, Latin salsa, French for fun, Spanish, drawing/illustrating, crocheting/knitting, sewing and ceramics. There are also classes in computer navigation, basic cooking and etiquette.

Classes (unless otherwise stated) begin on January 19 and end on March 9. Registration is now underway, and ends on Friday. Applications received after 4.45 p.m. that day will incur an extra, late registration fee. The Early Bird Special offers anyone registering for one class to get a second one half price, with a limit of two classes per person.
