Event to stress importance of reading
An event designed to encourage family members to have fun together is to take place tomorrow.
'Sowing Seeds for the Future' is being hosted by Finance Minister Paula Cox's PLP Constituency 14 and according to one of the organisers, Pat Pogson Nesbitt, the event's motto is 'each one teach one, each one read to one'.
The event is being emceed by Hott 107.5 fm radio host Nikita Robinson who often reads excerpts from books on her show. "We wanted to have her, because she is very much a reader," said Mrs. Nesbitt.
Seven-year-old author Malaikah Abdul-Jabbar will also read from her book 'Stop the Shooting' and Joanne Ball Burgess, the author of 'The Lizard and the Rock' and the new education and community outreach officer at the Bermuda National Gallery, will be on hand to read from her book.
"The Minister is going to be reading with her, so that's going to be a nice little event. It's the message in her book that is really good 'free to be who you are'," added Mrs. Nesbitt.
There will be lots of children's games and Department of Parks supervisory foreman Roger Parris, who works at the Arboretum, will be there to share his expertise in the growing of plants. "He will teach the children that come how to plant seeds," said Mrs Nesbitt.
Mrs. Nesbitt said the event is for the whole community. "The idea is to start bringing the constituency together and doing some wholesome pieces for people in Bermuda. It's time to bring families together.
"It is all free and we just want people to come and have a great time listening to the stories, playing games and if you have never planted a seed then this will be a good time to come and learn with your children."
The event, at the Arboretum, is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Refreshments will be sold on site. All events are free.
