Helping student artists make a name for themselves

Art exhibition Just Pastels X that opens on Sunday at the Bermuda Arts Centre in Dockyard, isn't just a showcase for art, but also for Bermuda's budding artists.

The art show featuring well-known artist Sharon Wilson and her students celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and will include 75 pieces of art for sale, priced affordably, and the opportunity to meet and question the artists. Part of the aim of the exhibition is to help student artists make a name for themselves.

"We have been bringing Bermuda the highest level of student for ten years," said Ms Wilson.

"We realise as student artists there is a need to personally meet and greet our viewing public at the opening.

"We want to make those unaccustomed with the art gallery setting feel comfortable, and we want to introduce ourselves to those art lovers who may not know us individually, and we want to connect with those that do know us."

Ms Wilson said she recognised that often at art openings, things were too exciting and hectic for everyone to be introduced and have their questions answered.

"This year artists will be wearing 'I'm an exhibiting artist' labels," she said. "Never feel any question is too stupid to ask."

The show opening will also include incentives such as raffling of several original paintings, and other special prizes.

Artists this year include two new faces, Vanessa Turner and Charmaine Friday, and returning artists Sharon Wilson, Frank Dublin; Pauline Monteith; Andrea Peets; Frances Furbert, April Branco, Francisca Ward, Sharon Nannini, Linda Fowle, Meredith Smith, Chikako Hoshina, and Monica Jones.

But Ms Wilson said the exhibition will have more than 'Just Pastels' on offer, as the show name would suggest.

"We should really have billed ourselves as the 'Not Just Pastels Show' this year," said artist Monica Jones. "Sharon Wilson will have encaustic paintings, which is a medium used in ancient times by the Egyptians, as well as some beautiful pastel paintings."

The show was due to take place at the Bermuda Arts Center at Dockyard, across from the entrance to Dolphin Quest, yesterday. Due to the weather, the show now opens on September 26 from 5.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. and runs until October 22.

The Center is open everyday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. All are welcome and admission is free.
