Children over the age of 14 are now guiding gallery visitors through exhibits on display.

To prepare for that, students are offered lessons on the art displayed in a particular exhibit. The programme, sponsored by Bermuda-based insurer Catlin Group Ltd., also helps participants improve their public speaking to better engage gallery audiences.

"The aim is to encourage appreciation for art as well as a greater understanding for new ideas, tradition and history," said student docent programme leader Cortney Bernstein.

"Students sharpen basic skills and build knowledge by analysing, interpreting, and presenting gallery pieces to their peers.

"The programme builds confidence and poise while challenging young people."

Katie Cusumano was one of the first student docents.

She said she was "amazed" by the BNG staff's dedication to the programme.

"I think it's a really great opportunity for students to become more aware of art, and I know that I personally don't have much involvement in my school's art programme, so it is excellent to have a chance to become more involved in the community through arts," said Miss Cusumano.

"I look forward to getting more experience as a docent, and overall becoming a more confident speaker through the programme, and would recommend trying it."
