Spirited singing and powerful preaching marked the two services at St Paul AME Church Heritage Hall on Sunday, climaxing a week of activities observing the church’s annual Men’s Day.The hall was packed to overflowing at both the morning and afternoon services conducted by St Paul’s pastor, the Rev. Dr. Lanel D. Guyton, and his ministerial team, comprising Rev. Mrs. Judith Gardner and the Rev. Quinton Ming. The theme for the day, “Seeking Men After God’s Own Heart”, was expounded at the morning service by guest preacher the Rev. Leon Jennings, who pointedly asked the congregation: “Are You Seeking a Man or are you a Peeking Man.”The afternoon preacher was Bishop Lloyd Duncan, the Overseer of the Church of God Denomination in Bermuda. He literally raised the roof of the church with his inimitable style of singing and preaching. The Men’s Day Committee that planned the activities was co-chaired by Laurel Simmons and Vincent (Drip) Minors. The church singled out eight men for special honours and presentation of beautifully inscribed plaques. They were described as “ordinary men doing extraordinary things”.Honorees at the morning service were Deputy Premier Derrick Burges, Dr. Vincent John, Sinclair Furbert and assistant organist Sherwin Jones, who was unavoidably absent.Afternoon honorees were former Cabinet Minister Dale Butler, former Senator Ira Philip and Odwin Berkeley. Some of the highlights of the services were captured in these four pictures through courtesy of Lanell Furbert. They show worshippers at the service; Men at the Altar following Bishop Duncan’s ‘altar call’.
