Residents of all ages have been waving their patriotic flags high this summer and telling tourists about the wonderful sights and sounds the Island has to offer. The Department of Tourism selected 14 seniors and 11 youngsters to be ambassadors for the Island and heat up the tourist season. The programme, which is in its fourth year, encourages knowledgeable citizens to share their love and passion for the Island with visitors they meet. Dressed in bright orange, the ambassadors are tasked with travelling to major tourist hubs such as Dockyard, St George’s and Hamilton and providing tourists with local information with a smile.Tourism Minister Patrice Minors said of the initiative: “Quite simply, the Tourism Ambassador Programme, involves university students interested in the hospitality industry serving as tourist information liaisons to visitors for a ten-week period.“The programme also includes some of our seniors also taking on the role of tourism ambassadors. Once again this summer our younger and older generations will work side by side in high traffic areas in Dockyard, Hamilton and St. George’s to ensure that visitors to our Island have a unique and enjoyable experience.“They will provide on-the-ground assistance to our cruise ship visitors, share with them information on Bermuda’s sights, attractions, culture, history and restaurants, and promote the many things to see and do on the Island.”In addition to passing on local knowledge to visitors, the younger ambassadors also have the chance to explore different internship roles within the Tourism Department. They will be involved with the event marketing and promotion of various Bermuda Nights and several Sizzling Summer activities and events, said Ms Minors.“As we go into the heart of our tourism season, these ambassadors will continue to showcase Bermudian hospitality and go the extra mile to ensure that our visitors have a positive and memorable experience while on our shores.”To see what some of the ambassadors had to say about the exciting new role see the sidebar.
