Learn about African humanities at camp

Young men will have the opportunity to learn more about African humanities and build their self-esteem in a special five day summer camp .Bermuda College adjunct lecturer and experienced educator, Quinton Sherlock Jr is inviting participants to sign up for, ‘Camp Pauulu’, a pilot programme targeting middle school males from 11 to 14-years-old.The pilot has been developed as a summer camp that introduces participants to the idea of self-knowledge and the acquisition of new skills. Participants will learn about culture, history and the roles played by key individuals and groups within the Bermuda story. The camp will incorporate creative and fun learning vehicles throughout the week. Each day participants will go out on field trips, culminating with a visit to Chewstick on the final day of the camp.“‘Camp Pauulu’ is also about connecting young men with an adult model,” said Mr Sherlock. “To this end, in order to get into the camp each young man alongside an adult must complete a workshop, offered on either July 5 at 6pm or July 9 at 2pm. There are also workshops offered on July 19 and July 23. The workshops will serve as an orientation to ‘Camp Pauulu’ for the young person and adult. They will participate in group activities and will be provided with a workbook for the session. Workshops will be held at Chewstick Foundation Headquarters, on the corner of Elliot Street and Court Street. The workshop fee is $20. This covers the young person, adult and workbook. Students can sign-up for one of two orientation workshops by contacting the Chewstick Foundation (contact information below). The camp will take place from August 8 to 12 at Vernon Temple AME Church, in Southampton or from August 15 to 19 at Manchester Unity Hall, in the City of Hamilton. The fee for the week long camp will be $60 per week. For more information, or to sign up for either of the workshops, call 292-2439 (CHEW), or e-mail info[AT]chewstick.org. Space is limited.
