Long-time resident of Bermuda dies in US
News has been received of the death of former long-time Bermuda resident Angelita Newton. She died on April 9 in Redding, Connecticut aged 89.Born in 1921 in Barcelona, Spain, she was educated in Paris, London and Alexandria, Egypt, before arriving in New York City in 1939.There she met and married John Newton, a marriage which would last for 70 years.They lived in New York, London and Greenwich, Connecticut, before settling in Bermuda for 36 years where Mr Newton opened a Mobil Oil office and later was advisor to the AF Smith family business.Angelita was predeceased by Mr Newton and her eldest daughter, Jo-Ann Vercoe (Will) Moody (Stan). She is survived by her older brother Wilson Alonso, daughters Nancy duBusc (Richard) and Pamela Newkirk (Ben) eight grand- and eight great-grandchildren.Mrs Newton’s family said that while in Bermuda she volunteered as a Pink Lady at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital’s coffee shop for more than 25 years. She was a member of the Mid Ocean Club where she enjoyed playing golf and bridge with her many friends.“A sensational homemaker and cook, she created such a warm and inviting home. Her altruistic and endearing ways will be missed by her family and all who knew her,” her family said.
