Two college graduates working as interns for the Corporation of Hamilton are winning plaudits at City Hall.Kevin Smith and Tamara Bradshaw have taken on the roles to gain experience as they search for full-time jobs in their chosen fields.Mr Smith recently graduated from Laurentian University in Ontario with a business administration degree and a major in marketing, while Ms Bradshaw holds an entertainment business degree from Full Sail University in Orlando.City Hall staff have described both as invaluable additions to the Events Department, where they help organise activities on the City’s calendar, such as the Art in the Park, which is at Queen Elizabeth Park until Thursday and the Fashion Festival.Events Project Manager Danilee Trott said: “I met Kevin last year when he came to work as a summer student. He picks up really quickly, he is open to learning new things and has a positive attitude.“He has a good work ethic and that is encouraging to see, especially in a young man. He is willing and ready to do anything and, because of that, I have been increasing the amount of things I have entrusted in him.“When he called in December and said he would be home in January and asked if he could come I was happy to accept him as an intern. He’s been a welcome addition to the Events Department.“He was the coordinator for our first ever City Car Show in February. He did an amazing job and I was so proud of him. He absorbs things well. Event management is something that comes with experience and time and practise. His degree is in marketing and he enjoys that part of it. His position is Events and Marketing intern and he works with our communications manager as well to assist with us promoting and marketing events. He’s doing a good job and I’m really pleased with him.”Ms Bradshaw graduated in April but has committed to staying with the City of Hamilton until the end of the summer in order to help coordinate the Fashion Festival. She, too, says Ms Trott, brings energy and enthusiasm to her task.“This is her first time here with us, she started in February and started out with a bang. She is young and energetic and excited to do something that she enjoys. She understood that because of the field she wanted to be in she needs to get some experience under her belt.“She told me she is committed to stay at least until September and so will be here for the entire summer, which is our busy season. She is a fast learner, is very positive and follows instruction well and, as her time increases, she will get more responsibility as well. She’s a fashion enthusiast and has her own style blog and so I have her working on the Fashion Festival and she is really enjoying that. She’s learning a lot about the industry and is helping with other projects as well.“When I bring interns in I try to give them things not only in the area that they studied but in the areas that they enjoy. It gets them more involved and they take more ownership of the projects. I find when people have that feeling of ownership that they tend to be more comfortable with it and take more responsibility for it.”Useful websites: www.cityhall.bm and www.tmaraxo.com.
