Weekend Roundup 18 May 2012
This weekend appears to be light on organised parties, but heavy on other forms of family-fun entertainment. One of this weekend’s top crowd pleasers is expected to be Drumline 2012, taking place on Sunday at 3pm.The event, put on by organisers Yhoshi Productions, will bring together local bands like the National Drumline, PHC Drumcore, Sandys “Showtime” Drumline and Whitney Drumline.Overseas talents from Howard University’s Showtime Band and Gwynn Park High School’s Marching Yellow Jackets will also be performing.According to producer Sancha Durhan it’s an event suitable for people of all ages. She said: “I think most events kind of appeal more to an older demographic, but this is for the whole community.“We are urging people to bring their kids and grandparents for some good clean fun for everyone.”Due to financial challenges the overseas groups will not be staying to take part in the May 24 parade. Ms Durhan said the Drum Line would therefore be the public’s only chance to see the bands in action this year. The event will take place at the National Stadium from 3pm until 6.30pm. Food vendors will be on hand for people who wish to make “a day out of it,” said Ms Durhan.Reserved seating costs $50 to $125, depending on the seating section. General admission is $35 or $50. All tickets are available at 27th Century Boutique, Liberty Theatre, City Hall Box Office and Scoops Ice Cream Parlour, and Nailbar in Southampton. Patterson: Out & Bad exhibition, which addresses fashion and the construct of identity within the Jamaican dance hall culture.“The Caribbean atmosphere generated by the art exhibition leads to a natural fit for a collaboration with the West Indian Association and everyone with Caribbean roots and interests.” Admission is complimentary.
