Putting food on the table
For some lucky people a turkey is a given at Christmas time, but for others the price tag on the bird makes it an impossible dream. Thanks to a recent Bank of Bermuda Foundation donation to the Salvation Army, more needy families in Bermuda will have a taste of that yummy, salty goodness this holiday season. The Salvation Army expected to spend $100,000 putting food on the table for 1,400 families this Christmas through their Christmas Assistance Programme. They are also trying to provide Christmas toys for 1,000 children on the Island. The organisation attributed a rising need for their services to an increase in unemployment in Bermuda.“For many years the Foundation has supported the Salvation Army’s Christmas Assistance Programmes as well as the continuance of Salvation Army’s vital programmes,” said David Hamshere, chairman of the Bank of Bermuda Foundation. “We truly appreciate the great work that the Salvation Army does for the Bermuda community. With our assistance needy families receive Christmas turkeys, chickens and grocery vouchers to purchase necessities. In addition we provide support for the homeless and gifts for children of the families supported.”Wholesale company Butterfield & Vallis partnered with the Bank of Bermuda Foundation to assist the Salvation Army.“The Salvation Army serves as an expression of hope and dignity within the community,” said Major Shawn Critch of the Salvation Army. “It is a pleasure to again have the Bank of Bermuda Foundation partner with us for the 2012 Christmas Assistance Programme in such a significant way. Our shared commitment in meeting human need and being a transforming influence within Bermuda continues to be strengthened as we assist those who are struggling to face the personal, domestic and economic realities of today. The Foundation represents a highly valued partner in their support our community based programmes. We are also grateful for the ongoing support of Butterfield & Vallis to our Community and Family Services programme not just at Christmas, but throughout the year. The community is strengthened when we face our realities together.”The Bank of Bermuda Foundation also made donations to the Hands of Love Ministry, the Family Centre, Age Concern, the Anglican Church of Bermuda and the Coalition for the Protection of Children.“The Bank of Bermuda Foundation recognises the needs of the community during these very difficult economic times and stands ready to support where possible,” said Mr Hamshere.Useful website: www.bankofbermudafoundation.bm .
