BSM Lunchtime Concert Series returns Friday

The Bermuda School of Music will launch its popular Lunchtime Concert Series on Friday. On offer is an hour-long programme of works by Dvorak, Mozart and Tchaikovsky, presented by BSM faculty members Lionel Thomas (violin) and Oliver Grant (piano). The concert will open with the first movement of Dvorak’s ‘Sonatina, Op 100’.This will be followed by Mozart’s ‘Sonata KV304’, and conclude with the first movement of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Violin Concerto, Op 35’.Dvorak’s ‘Sonatina’, written in 1893, was the final chamber composition by the Czech Romantic composer while living in America. He stated at the time that it was “intended for youths, dedicated to my two children, but even grown-up adults should be able to converse with it”.Mozart’s ‘Sonata No 21’ was composed in 1778 while he was living in Paris, and during the same period as his mother’s early death.Tchaikovsky’s ‘Violin Concerto in D Major’, written in 1878, is one of the best known of all violin concertos.Composed in just one month while Tchaikovsky was staying in a Swiss resort, it was not an immediate success. In fact, the original dedicatee, Leopold Auer, refused to premiere the work, stating it was not suited to the violin and unplayable. One critic wrote: “The violin is no longer played but torn apart, pounded black and blue …”First performed by violinist Adolph Brodsky in 1881, it has been championed ever since, and today remains one of the most loved of all violin concertos ever written. Both Mr Thomas and Mr Grant enjoy a well-established reputation for excellent musicianship, and Friday’s concert promises to be further evidence of that.As always, the venue is the Wesley Methodist Church on Church Street, and the starting time is 12 noon. All are welcome.Admission is free. Donations to the Bermuda School of Music’s Bursary Fund, which assists students who are unable to finance their lessons, will be gratefully accepted.
