Make it a light-out night and have fun

Earth Hour started back in 2007, when two million residents in Sydney, Australia decided to turn off household electronics and lights for an hour to raise awareness on climate change.Millions of homes and businesses in close to 152 countries are expected to take part in the event tomorrow.Bermuda residents are urged to play their part by turning off all non-essential lights from 8.30pm until 9.30pm. Not sure what you can do with all that time? Here’s a list of some ways to spend Earth Hour 2013.1. Give the stove, microwave and oven a break for the evening and host a fondue night. You get to dip everything from crusty bread, to apples, grapes and broccoli into melted cheeses — and the bonus is no electricity is required.2. Catch up on sleep. Without your phone buzzing and television serving as a distraction, you might be able to get caught up on some much needed rest.3. Play games by candlelight. Board games like Scrabble and Monopoly, need not be only for rainy-day occasions. This could be a perfect opportunity to have some family fun. The challenge will be trying to read all those Scrabble letters in the dark.4. Host an adventure for the children. Why not get out the camping gear and have an outdoor sleeping party with the little ones? It can even be done inside if the weather’s not great. Just set up a tent and tell spooky stories until bedtime.5. For the romantics among us, plan to take that special someone for a moonlit walk. Take a trip to your favourite outdoor spot, lay down a blanket and spend the hour gazing up at the stars.6. If you have the space in your house and don’t mind getting a little (or a lot) messy, try getting artsy in the dark. All you need is a roll of plain wallpaper. Lay it out on a table and let your creative side run free. You never know, you might have something worth keeping when you turn on the lights again.7. Don’t like drawing? Try your hand at knitting or sewing by candlelight instead.8. Why not dust off the guitar or keyboard and play some songs for the family and friends to listen to. If you’re not musically inclined, you can sing your favourite Disney songs by memory.Useful website: www.earthhour.org
