Joyful tales of school and Mud

Building Hope tells the joyful story of the construction of Mahiga Hope High School in rural Kenya and the African community working to create a better future for their children. The film will screen at BUEI at 3pm.

A documentary, which tells the joyful story about the building of the first high school in a remote Kenyan community, and an emotionally engaging drama, starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, will both be screening this weekend.Building Hope is the inspirational story of how a community in rural Kenya partnered with an international non-profit organisation to build their first secondary school, called Mahiga Hope High School. The film shows how the Kenyan government had made primary school free and mandatory in 2003, but there were still many communities without a high school. As a result, for many children education ended at grade eight.Duncan Hall, the programming director, said: “This documentary has echoes of the feature film The First Grader, which was a huge hit at the Weekend Film Series.“The First Grader was about an 83-year-old man who showed up to primary school when the Kenyan government began to offer it for free — and this film is about building schools so that the students who began school in 2003 can continue their education.”On screen appearances are made by Kenyan youth counsellor, Auma Obama, half-sister of President Barack Obama; and Cameron Sinclair, founder of Architecture for Humanity.Proceeds from the screening fee in Bermuda will benefit the Kenya Schools Fund; and will help with building classrooms, libraries, computer labs and water systems at rural Kenyan schools.Mud, featuring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, is described as a coming-of-age drama about the adventure or two boys, Ellis and his friend Neckbone, who find a man named Mud (McConaughey) hiding out on an island in the Mississippi River.“[The film] describes fantastic scenarios — he killed a man in Texas and vengeful bounty hunters are coming to get him,” Mr Hall explained.“He says he is planning to meet and escape with the love of his life, Juniper (Witherspoon), who is waiting for him in town. Sceptical but intrigued, Ellis and Neckbone agree to help him.“It isn’t long until Mud’s visions come true and their small town is besieged by a beautiful girl with a line of bounty hunters in tow in this powerful story about love, friendship and loyalties.”Building Hope will be showing at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) this Sunday at 3pm; while Mud will screen at 5.15pm.The Weekend Film Series, sponsored by Gosling’s, is a joint production of Bermuda Documentary Film Festival director Duncan Hall and the BUEI.Trailers of the films can be viewed at www.bermudadocs.com; while tickets are on sale now at the Oceans Gift Shop at the BUEI, or by calling 294-0204.
