Inspiring story from Rwanda features at Bermuda Docs
An award-winning documentary telling the true story of how a group of athletes in Rwanda used cycling to give their country a glimpse of hope will be screening this weekend as part of the Bermuda Docs Weekend Film Series.Also on offer will be a film based on the true-life story of Paul Raymond, one of Britain’s leading nude revue producers, called ‘The Look of Love’.First up this Sunday, will be Rising from Ashes, produced and narrated by Forest Whitaker. It tells how two worlds collide after cycling star Jock Boyer moves to Rwanda, to help a group of struggling genocide survivors pursue their dream of forming a national cycling team.The film, screening at 3pm at Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI), gives a rare glimpse into these inspirational people’s lives. Director of Bermuda Documentary Film Festival, Duncan Hall, said: “In Rwanda, ‘the land of the thousand hills’, the bicycle is essential to everyday life. During the 1994 genocide, it is how some survived.“Amid the heartache and trauma, post-genocide, a committed group of young cyclists began importing racing bikes with the hope of resurrecting the sport.“In 2006, two worlds collided when American cycling legend Jock Boyer moved to Rwanda to help the country’s national cycling team in their attempt to qualify for the Olympic Games.“Star cyclist Adrien Niyonshuti lost 60 family members in the genocide. Setting out against seemingly impossible odds Jock, Adrien and the team find new purpose as they rise from the ashes of the past.”The film’s has won awards at festivals across the US, including Aspen, Austin, Boulder, Denver, River Run, Napa Valley, Hamptons, and Telluride, as well as in The Bahamas.The Look of Love (rated R) will screen on Sunday at 5.15pm in the TradeWinds Auditorium at BUEI.Actor Steve Coogan (known from movies like The Trip and 24 Hour Party People), plays Paul Raymond, the man behind Soho’s notorious Raymond Revue Bar and Men Only magazine.Mr Raymond began his professional life with an end of the pier mind-reading act, but soon realised that the audience were more interested in watching his beautiful assistant.
