Poetry: Raw and uncut at Chewstick
It will be poetry from some of Bermuda’s best poets, raw and uncut this Thursday at Chewstick.Community and Cultural Affairs Folklife Officer Dr Kim Dismont-Robinson, Tiffany Paynter, and Nick Hutchings will read their work at the last event in the Ars Poetica series.“It will be a night about the poetry, about the poets delivering it, uninterrupted, unyielding and raw,” said Deidre-Lee Bean of Chewstick.Since Chewstick began the series in June they have featured several poets including Veejay Steede, Laurel Monkman, Dejon Simons, Alan Smith and Stephan Johnstone.“Audiences have experienced the array of vessels, sounds and souls of poetic expression,” said Ms Bean. “Thursday’s group will be three extraordinary and very different poets.”Ms Bean said the previous events in the series went well and were attended by both new people and by many Chewstick regulars.“Everyone there was thoroughly inspired,” she said. “The community of poets in Bermuda is growing and curator of the series, Yesha Townsend, and the entire team at The Chewstick Foundation are happy to invite more people to The Chewstick Neo-Griot Lounge to celebrate the artistic diversity of poetry as a primary medium of storytelling and of finding ones voice. It is a tremendous opportunity to show the diversity of expression within the art form.”Dr Robinson said she was happy to accept the invitation to read her work at Ars Poetica.“Given my interest in the literary arts, I’m pleased that Chewstick decided to have this series focusing on the written word,” said Dr Robinson. “I’ve gotten away from poetry a bit as my creative focus over the past couple of years has been playwriting and, more recently, fiction. So it’s nice to have my hand back in poetry for this event.“I haven’t fully decided which pieces to read and which to leave for another day, but regardless I’m certain I’ll be including some new work.”The Ars Poetica Summer Series, curated by Ms Townsend, in conjunction with The Chewstick Foundation, celebrates the beauty and artistry that is poetry.“The series has allowed the genre of poetry to be featured on its own uninterrupted night,” Ms Lee said.Ms Townsend said: “It’s about the poem. Top to bottom. Ars Poetica is an unobtrusive moment with poetry, nothing else, no flash just a stage, a poet and their words.”Proceeds from Ars Poetica go to the ChewSLAM Teen Poetry Club.“This allows the poets presenting as well as attendees to lend their support to a vital programme managed by The Chewstick Foundation while enjoying an evening out,” said Ms Bean. “Don’t miss the opportunity to see poetry at its purest as each poet featured in this last installment for this year. It will further enhance the excellence of the series and leave the audience thoroughly entertained.”The event will be on Thursday at Chewstick on Elliot Street. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts 8pm. Entry is $10 at the door. For more information e-mail info@chewstick.org or call 292-239.
