Men urged to get moving for their health

If you’re the type of man who spends hours sitting down in front of the TV watching a game or the type whose desk at the office has become like a second home, then the latest race day event is for you.

Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s will be hosting an event called ‘Man on the Run’, kicking off at Warwick Academy on Sunday at 8.30am.

The 5K running and walking event for men and boys was created with the aim of raising awareness about male cancers, particularly prostate cancer.

The Centre is hoping runners will help to raise money for its Men’s Health Programmes, which provide men with access to healthcare that they otherwise might not seek or be able to afford.

The race was envisioned by volunteer Clifford S Roberts Jr, who is an avid runner and cyclist himself.

Mr Roberts said: “Prostate cancer is not something men like to talk about, but bringing men together for an event like this will encourage natural conversations about the importance of early detection in saving lives.

“We really need to thank our sponsors Dove Men+Care and XL Group for supporting this initiative and making it a reality.”

Research shows that sitting for long periods and inactivity can be linked to increased risks of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and depression.

For instance men who sit for more than six hours a day have an 18 percent increased risk of dying from heart disease and a 7.8 percent increased chance of dying from diabetes compared with someone who sits for three hours or less a day. ^

Another alarming statistic shows that this year there will be more deaths attributed to physical inactivity (5.3 million) than deaths due to smoking (5 million).

The Centre is therefore encouraging boys and men of all ages to get moving. Participants can register for the Man on the Run 5K walk/run by visiting www.racedayworld.com. They can also find out more information about the race by visiting www.movember.bm or visiting Movember Bermuda on Facebook.

Race day numbers can be picked up at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, located at 46 Point Finger Road on Saturday from 9:30am until 12:30pm.
