Fashionista on the street
Winter is almost upon us, and stylish coats, boots and sweaters are all out in full force.
For this week's 'Fashionista on the Street' column, The Royal Gazette Lifestyle section took a stroll through Hamilton in search of people who added a little something special to their cold weather looks.
We stumbled on event co-ordinator Tamara Bradshaw, 23, who said her staple items for the season were a great coat and statement scarf. “I also love statement sweaters because it's always one easy thing that stands out,” she said. “I would say the coat and the scarf are great to keep warm.”
Ms Bradshaw described her style as versatile, fun and chic. She said: “Weather is definitely a factor. If it's cold I will dress a little warmer of if I am in a relaxed mood I might wear slacks rather than a dress, which I tend to wear when I feel like dressing up and being more girly.”
Her advice to anyone looking to stay on trend this winter is to dress comfortably for the temperature inside, then add a stylish coat and great shoes to stay warm and fashionable when you're out on the street.
Cushi Ming, a 27-year-old graphic designer, couldn't easily describe his style. He said he likes to incorporate all kinds of looks to his wardrobe and doesn't like to limit himself to one particular trend.
Unlike other people who might struggle to stay stylish in the cold months, he said he loves the winter time.
“I can just throw on some layers, probably a nice Oxford button down shirt and sweater, a denim jacket, some long chinos and boots and call it a day,” he said.
His go-to item for the season is a duffel bag, made with well-crafted leather. Mr Ming said he looks for that and other trends online or in magazines like GQ and Complex.
Retiree Sally-Ann Baron said her winter style was all about ease.
“I don't wear anything that is not comfortable,” she explained. “I really enjoy fashion and love reading about it and mixing it up with different patterns and styles.”
She said jeans were her favourite item for the Bermuda winter because they can be dressed up or down, depending on what you pair with them but when she visits colder climates, it's all about the boots “which are both stylish and functional”.
Lisa Furtado, 21, was spotted in the city wearing a jean shirt, patterned sweater and black tights. She said the preppy look was inspired by her mood, as are many of the other fashion looks she puts together.
Her fingernails were adorned in maroon polish — she explained she tends to stick to neutral nail colours in the winter and bold shades in the summer. The clothing sales representative said one tip when it comes to fashion is to just be yourself and wear what makes you happy. “You can put anything together pretty much and it tends to look decent,” she added.
For Melanie Cox, the winter weather allows her to get out her favourite boots and simple knee-length jackets from storage.
She said: “You can't go wrong with boots. They look nice to rock and dress up an outfit.”
Her advice to anyone looking to spice up their wardrobe this season: “Set your own trends and try to stand out different from everyone else.”
She added: “Fashion is about the little pieces you put together that make an outfit. Remember, it's not just what you wear, but how you wear it.”
