Some clothes never go out of style

Famed designer Coco Chanel once said: “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.” That saying inspired this week’s ‘Fashionista on the Street’ column.

While out and about on the city streets, The Royal Gazette Lifestyle section asked a few trendy women about which one clothing or accessory item they feel will never go out of style.

Twenty-three-year-old Shante Ingemann thought of three timeless items, which always stay on trend.

She said: “A basic [high-heel] pump, red lipstick and leopard print cardigan in my view are always something simple that you can piece with anything.”

Ms Ingemann described her style as “varied” and “edgy” and said she dresses depending on how she feels on that particular day.

She said she gets inspiration from old Hollywood films and seeing the styles in New York and other parts of the world.

Student Riley Henderson said some things that never go out of style are a great pair of shoes and quality handbag.

The 20-year-old said: “Shoes are my addiction. My boyfriend counted the shoes in my closet the other day and he was up to 75 pairs before he stopped counting.

“In my opinion the right pair of shoes can be worn over and over again, like sandals and boots, and they can be coordinated to go with a lot of different things.

“A really nice bag can also go with anything, so one or two quality bags will probably never go out of style.”

Ms Henderson, whose style is a mix of classic, edgy and alternative pieces, said she gets her fashion inspiration from social media sites like Tumblr.

She also reads magazines like Cosmopolitan and Vogue and follows fashion bloggers that she learned about via Instagram.

Shadre Steede, a sales assistant at Crissons, said she doesn’t try to keep up with any fashion industry trends and tends to just pick items that catch her eye.

“I’m into the arts so I sometimes find inspiration when I see paintings, drawings or acting,” she said.

In her view no clothing or accessory items are ever really discarded; she said they tend to come back in style a few years down the road.

“The big sweaters that everyone wears now are the same kind of thing that my mom wore when she was growing up in the 1970s. And now I wear them.”
