It’s time for romance

Flirtini — a Valentine’s Cocktail available this weekend at Jasmine Lounge at Fairmont Southampton Princess

Roses are red, violets are blue — Valentine’s Day is here, what should you do?

Okay, so that was a little (or a lot) cheesy, but don’t let that stop you from partaking in one of the many romantic, quirky or fun activities taking place in honour of V-Day.

In case you’re contemplating just laying low this week, here’s a roundup of some of the special events going on this week to help you change your mind.

Masterworks is inviting the public to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a spot of tea on Thursday at 3pm. For $10, you can relax in their lounge with a friend or loved one, while savouring teas and other treats as you enjoy the views of the Botanical Gardens. Spaces are limited for this Pre-Valentine’s Day High Tea Party, so reserve your space by calling 299-4000.

Bermuda Society of the Arts will be celebrating a day early with their NOT Valentine’s Day Champagne and Chocolate Tasting on Thursday at 6pm. Those who book their spot will get to sample decadent chocolate creations from local chocolatiers, along with six sumptuous sparkling wines and champagnes from around the world, specially selected by Michael Robinson. Tickets for non-members are $75, while members are $70. You may also be able to ask about booking a table of ten for $600. But be warned: seats are selling fast. Call 292-3824 or e-mail bsoa@ibl.bm to reserve a spot or order online at www.bdatix.bm.

After a long hard week, you’re idea of celebrating might just be getting pampered. Willow Stream Spa will be offering a Valentines Day Package for couples in one of their lounge’s, complete with a special foot soak and foot treatment and indulgent 60 minute hot stone massage, followed by champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. The package is $749, plus gratuities.

If you don’t want to go all out, you can simply surprise your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day by upgrading their spa treatment with a glass of champagne & chocolate covered strawberries, for $35. To book a reservation call 239-6924.

Looking to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a night out on the town? Polished Nail Boutique will be hosting a party ‘Shoot Me Your Love’ at Atelier Lounge, located on 56 Reid Street. From 9pm onwards, couples can enjoy an open bar, light refreshments, and great music — while also being eligible for a host of door prizes and giveaways. Tickets are $50 in advance from Polished Nail Boutique or $60 at the door.

Jasmine Lounge will be offering live entertainment from Friday to Sunday — along with a special Valentine’s cocktail (see sidebar for the recipe).

Guests are invited to listen to music from local band EXCLUSIVE on Friday & Saturday, while talented trio Crown & Anchor will be playing on Sunday.

The West Indian Association of Bermuda will be hosting a party for a good cause on Friday — with their Give From The Heart Valentine’s Night Caribbean Party at the Police Recreation Club. Dance the night away thanks to music from DJ Ragin Bajan, while you enjoy drinks from the cash bar. Food will also be for sale at the party. Tickets are $30 with proceeds going to Caribbean Flood Relief Efforts in St Vincent, St Lucia and Dominica. Call 535-1944 for more details.

If you’re in the East End, St George’s Cricket Club will be hosting The Love Train on Friday at 9pm. Local group U-Fonics will be performing at 10.30pm, while ‘Malcolm Lethal’ Weapon Smith will be playing music; and comedian Bootsie serving as MC. Gosling’s is expected to have door prizes, special drink prices and more on offer. Tickets, $25 or $20 for members, are available from Kit & Caboodle and St. George’s Cricket Club.

Take a literal stance on the saying ‘Get a room’ and invite your sweetheart to a Romantic Staycation at The Fairmont Southampton. Rooms cost $239 per night — plus tax and gratuities — and can be reserved by calling 238-8000. Hotel and dinner packages at Waterlot are also available.

Looking for a fine dining experience? Take that foodie in your life to The Waterlot Inn, which is offering a seven course meal for $120 plus gratuities. Book by calling 238-8000. Or why not treat your valentine to a culinary adventure at The Newport, A Gastropub? The restaurant is offering classic cuisine with a twist with a 4-course set menu for $79, plus gratuities. No reservations needed.

If you’re in the mood for dancing, why not take part in a Valentine’s Edition of Salsa Sundays. Held at Red Steakhouse in Hamilton, salsa group Bermuda Latin Vibes are encouraging people to come out and enjoy a “full Latin Experience” — complete with a free wine tasting selection, tasty tapas, great music and dance. They are also offering a free dance lesson for beginners. Admission is free.
