Flowers on Valentine’s Day are good, but how about something ‘really good?’

Matching tattoos are in our list of Valentine's Day gifts that some people would like alongside a bouquet of flowers.

And the war of the roses has begun. Valentine’s Day is coming up — ready, set, order that bouquet! The competition is on to find who in the office will get the largest, flashiest bunch of flowers.

But for many people, sending flowers on Valentine’s Day seems just the tiniest bit a cliché. Some people are left holding the flowers feeling grateful that their bouquet was bigger than everyone else’s, but still wistfully thinking wouldn’t it be nice to get something “really good” to go along with the bouquet. Eventually, the biggest bouquet in the office shrivels up into a brown mess and is tossed out.

Unfortunately, the definition of “really good” varies from person to person. For some people it’s a new iPhone, for other’s it’s a pony. The definition of “really good” can only be discovered by digging deep, and asking the question: “What is it you really want?” and being prepared for the answer. The Royal Gazette went really, really deep and polled Facebook for some “really good” Valentine’s Day gifts.

1. Dark chocolate. (It’s never a cliché.)

2. A potted plant. The idea is to give your love target something that doesn’t die, but will continue to blossom, like your love. Warning: Don’t get a cactus; it sends the wrong message.

3. Sexy lingerie knitted out of liquorice whips. (See: www.ecouterre.com/knit-a-pair-of-edible-undies-from-licorice-laces-diy-tutorial). Warning: This stuff is sticky and attracts ants.

4. Anything with the word Rolex written on it. (Enough said.)

5. Handmade card with lots of glitter and sequins. (See nearest five-year-old for details). Warning: back this up with something else “really, really good”.

6. Home cooked meal, if you actually know how to cook. This sounds cheesy but we got this answer from a number of women. If cooking is out, a booking at your love’s favourite restaurant will suffice. For easy recipe ideas see: www.askmen.com/fine_living/wine_dine_archive_100/131_wine_dine.html. Warning: If the stove catches fire, the restaurants will probably be all booked up so have a backup plan, like a frozen lasagne in the freezer.

7. A copy of the novel ‘50 Shades of Grey’ by EL James or whatever the latest hot romantic drivel (cough) novel is. Warning: this is not a gift for the English literature major. Also, to make it really romantic, read it together. (Seriously). (See www.heroesandheartbreakers.com/blogs/2013/07/the-ten-romance-novels-you-should-read-an-opinionated-opinion).

8. A bottle of wine with a sexy label like: Ménage à Trois Red, Flirt, Whispering Angel or Big Easy.

9. Matching tattoos to show your commitment to one another. Warning: make sure you get the correct spelling of each other’s names first.

10. A gift certificate for tattoo removal. (Again, we’re thinking back up plan).
