Sweetness and love ... direct from Sugar Hill’z bakery
Valentine’s Day is here and if you still haven’t bought something sweet for your true love, it’s okay to fudge it. That’s the word from Richard Gibbons Jr, owner of the new Sugar Hill’z home bakery in Sandys.
Sugar Hill’z specialises in “Bermudian” fudge.
“It has a different flavour and texture,” Mr Gibbons said. “It’s special,”
The fudge comes in several different flavours including peppermint, strawberry, cranberry walnut and several others. For Valentine’s Day Mr Gibbons has added heart shaped fudge with edible gold that comes with or without almonds, depending on your preference. He is also offering Valentine’s Day gift baskets and gift packets.
The newly opened bakery offers other goodies besides fudge, including Asian tapioca and bulla bread, a sweet Jamaican bread that contains nutmeg and cinnamon. They also offer gluten free products made using rice flour instead of wheat flour.
Mr Gibbons was previously working in landscaping and construction, but decided it was time to captain his own boat and open his own business.
He learned to cook from his aunts Veronica Clarke and Joceine Wade and grandmother Mary “Nana Mary” Smith.
“Their specialities were pretty much everything,” he said. “I loved my aunts’ soft chocolate chip cookies, in particular. I get the ambition for business from my mother, Deborah Gibbons.”
The bakery opened two weeks ago and as Valentine’s Day approached, and word got around, the phone started ringing off the hook with orders.
“Some people like to order some of our products to try them out,” Mr Gibbons said. “As soon as they try them they want them again. We have a wide varieties of flavours and people are now looking for the new new. People want to feed their taste buds.”
Sugar Hill’z will deliver their products so it is a no hassle purchase.
“Valentine’s Day is every day for me,” he said. “It shouldn’t just be one day of the year.”
Mr Gibbons said the sky was the limit as far as his goals for the bakery.
“I am never satisfied which means there is always room for improvement,” he said. “That is what a business is about.”
