‘You never know what you’ll get’
Roller derby, reducing traffic accidents and bees are just a few of the diverse topics coming up at the sixth annual PechaKucha Night this evening.
PechaKucha provides a forum for people in the community to share their bright ideas in a series of snapshot presentations. The format features 20 images related to the topic projected on a screen, each for 20 seconds, while the presenter talks along with the images. Following each presentation there is a three-minute question and answer period with the audience.
If you like learning new things and gaining new insight, but have a short attention span, this is the talk for you. It is a talk format that originated in Japan.
“PechaKucha Bermuda is getting out and is fast becoming very popular,” said organiser Nicky Gurret. “At the first one at the Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society (BMDS) we had about 40 people and at the BSOA we had 175 people. Our last one in Somerset at Sandys Boat Club had about 100 people attend. The Sandys Boat Club secretary said she had never seen so many people at the club on a Thursday night.”
All PechaKucha Bermuda are held on Thursday nights and organisers are committed to four a year.
Ms Gurret said the PechaKuchas were a bit like a box of chocolates. “You never know what you’ll get, but you know it will be good,” she said.
Tonight’s presentation takes place at the Blue Water Angler’s Club at 28 East Broadway in Hamilton. Doors open at 6pm and presentations begin at 6.30pm.The event is open to everyone and admission is free. A fish fry will also be available during the event for $15 per plate.
