There’s always one or two fashion items that a woman can’t — or shall we say, wouldn’t want to — live without.

For this week’s Fashion on the Street column we asked three women to tell us what their one must-have style item would be this summer.

Marketing professional Susan Jackson, 51, thought it wise to always invest in a good sundress for the warmer months.

“For me it’s the sundress because it can take me from the office to meetings to cocktails on a boat, all in the same outfit,” she said.

Ms Jackson described her style as simple and classic. “When I choose clothing it’s usually pieces that will last me a lifetime, so it’s not particularly trendy, but just a timeless and classic style,” she said.

Ms Jackson said she often gets inspired by seeing what others are wearing. She also likes the style of stars like Kerry Washington.

“[Kerry Washington] wears fantastic clothes. I like the fact that she’s conservative and it’s classic and she can wear it for years and it would still look great,” she added.

Tanisha Grant, who works in office operations, said one thing she would never step outside without is her heels.

“I think heels give you better posture, helps to elongate your legs and I just love them. I have a ton of heels at home in my closet, too many to count. I just bought some at Louboutin’s the other day.”

Ms Grant described her style as fun and flirty, but also versatile. The 28-year-old said: “I just pick what I like and go with the flow. Today I could be wearing something classy, tomorrow it could be funky.

“I normally get inspiration for my fashion sense from Rihanna and Beyonce, those are my two favourites. I like them because they are versatile like I am. For them it can be either up or down.”

Brittany Simmons, a 19-year-old student, described her style as simple, yet edgy.

“I find something I like based on the season. I tend to wear florals in the summer and dark colours in the winter,” she said.

Miss Simmons tends to get new ideas about fashion by flipping through the pages of magazines like Marie Claire or Seventeen.

She also spots inspiration on social media sites like Pinterest and Tumblr.

“One thing I can’t live without this summer is a maxi dress, like I have on now, and skater dresses which flair out,” she said. “They are easy to throw on, comfortable and very flowy. They also keep you cool.”
