Dapper dads for Father’s Day
If I had to describe my late father’s style I would have to use the word suave.
When he was lounging around the house he took comfort in wearing his favourite pair of jeans and worn-out T-shirts, but when it was time to dress up for work or a night out he always put his best foot forward. He rocked a well fitting, classic suit and tie with great confidence — and was always one to take pride in his appearance.
Some dads have style in spades, while others could probably use a little help in the fashion department.
For this week’s column we decided to ask four well-dressed people in the city to tell us what they loved about their dad’s style and one area where they think they could probably improve. (Perhaps their advice will inspire you while shopping for a gift for your dad on Father’s Day this Sunday.)
Asia Ming-Raynor admires that her dad always dresses up for his job in the technology field.
“He always looks presentable because he faces clients everyday and I love that about him,” she said. “His dress sense matches his personality as well. He is a very outgoing person, but can be reserved when it comes to customers.”
One area she thinks he could branch out is with the hues he wears.
Miss Ming-Raynor said: “I would try and put more colour in his life, although that would be hard.”
The 21-year-old tends to use more colour in her own wardrobe in the warmer months, which gives her a much-needed break from the darker colours, which becomes the norm for her in the winter. She typically shops at stores like Aldo and H&M and said she often looks for fashion inspiration on sites like Pinterest.com.
Emily Foster, meanwhile, said she liked to experiment with her style and admitted she loves shopping at thrift stores to get good value for money.
When it comes to picking new wardrobe items, Ms Foster said: “I don’t follow trends or feel like I am fashion forward, but I like to experiment with different things. The more ‘out there’ the better.”
Bermudian Ms Foster is currently working as a teacher in Toronto, Canada.
The 26-year-old described her dad’s style as very practical and inspired by the outdoors.
She said: “He spends most of his time outside so I think his style aims to be comfortable and I admire the fact that he wears clothes that work for him. He also windsurfs and stuff so he has a very beachy sort of style.”
Ms Foster said she would love to see her dad try out more traditional fashions like Bermuda shorts.
Jason Davis, 29, said his dad was young in his early 50s, but described his style as “back in the day”.
“He hasn’t really evolved,” said Mr Davis, who is a father himself. “He doesn’t like to dress up so I would encourage him to really dress up in a nice suit or something. I think it would look nice on him.”
Mr Davis said his own style is a little different and edgy and admitted he likes to play around with bright colours.
He tends to get fashion inspiration from celebrities like P Diddy who he calls a “trend setter” and rapper Jay-Z, who has mastered the urban chic look.
Kaitlyn Simmons, 27, described her father’s style as more basic than anything else.
“He’s not worried about name brands, so it’s just pretty simple,” she said. “He’s not really into fashion.
“If I could change one thing about his style it would be to not wear his pieces for too long. He can hold onto them for forever, so a little bit of renewing would be great I think.”
Mrs Simmons described her own personal style as a mix of everything.
“I tend to get inspiration from magazines and TV and will take on a little bit of what I like. I tend to like preppy, girlie and colourful clothes,” she explained.
