Conquering Hamilton
Marilyn Monroe, the epitome of Old Hollywood glamour, was known for wearing figure hugging dresses, bold crimson lipstick and high heels.
One of quotes she lived by was: “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world”.
This week The Royal Gazette’s Lifestyle section took to the city streets to find out what stylish women in Bermuda were most likely to wear on their feet — heels, wedges, flats or sandals.
Delphina Lodge told us it was all about the high heels in her view.
The 31-year-old said: “I prefer stilettos. I think it adds an element of sex appeal to your look. It lengthens your legs and makes you walk a little bit differently.”
Ms Lodge described her style as modern and said she tries to incorporate some newer trends into her look to “keep up with the times”.
“I usually will find a top I like and then match my outfit around that,” she said. “I also love bright colours because I’m a bright person and it brings out my personality.”
She tends to get fashion inspiration on the internet, especially sites like Instagram where she follows certain trendsetters and might pick up a thing or two from their style.
For college student Ellen Briers, 23, dressing tends to be more about being practical and relaxed.
She said: “I like flats all the way because they are comfortable. I usually try and pair them with something short.
“People sometimes wear longer skirts and dresses with flats and in my opinion it looks weird.
“I am quite tall and so if I had the choice, I would pick a shorter hemline to make my legs look longer.”
Miss Briers admitted she tends to wear whatever pieces she finds in her closet.
“Most of my clothes are back in the UK so when I come back to Bermuda for the summer it’s whatever I have left here to wear,” she said.
“I would call my style very casual. I like jeans with T-shirts. I am not a very fashionable person, but I do check out magazines and look at mannequins when I pass a store to see what have on.”
Human resource professional Kryshae Furbert said one thing that classifies her style is “bright colours”. By adding pops of vibrant colours to her look it makes her feel uplifted, she said.
She’s not sure where she gets her fashion inspiration from, but admitted she does like to shop online and may see new trends that way.
“My two favourite types of shoes are probably heels and wedges,” she said. “If it’s work I would wear a wedge because they give you height, but are still comfortable.
“But if I was going out I prefer heels, it’s more sexy and defines my legs better than wedges.”
Alexis Nusum, 37, agrees that heels are the best way to adorn her feet.
She said: “I actually feel comfortable in them and they make me feel confident.
“You might see me in flats, but very seldom. Flats are more appropriate when I am with my daughter. A two-year-old is hard to run after in heels.”
Ms Nusum said she tends to choose her clothing based on her mood. “I might start with a particular pair of shoes I want to wear that are comfortable and make me feel happy and I will work my way up from there.
“I also tend to wear reds because I like the colour and it looks good on my skin tone.”
She said there are no rules that govern what she will wear. She just buys whatever looks good and finds pieces that will match what she already has in her closet.
