The curse of modern technology

As a last resort yours truly is relying on a number of captioned photographs hoping they will enable me to reach the deadline for a submission this time around

Having spent much time researching, and nearly completing, what was intended to be my main feature titled: First The Orchids Then ‘The Hibiscus’ I learned the hard way how the marvels of this modern digital, technological time can be for you one moment, and against you at one and the same instant.

The feature I thought I had produced disappeared in cyberspace. Gone. Somehow, somewhere.

Those two bodies, the Orchid Charity Club and the Hibiscus Garden Club have been currently, though not jointly, celebrating a total of 120 years in their particular social and cultural realms of this country. The were founded by the ‘first ladies’ of Bermuda in their respective time, and are still going strong with proud records of accomplishments.

Now to my back up.

Highlights from the Fourways Inn, and the closing of the fantastic Dale Butler tribute to the late Hubert Smith, Sr. Hubie, as he was sometimes called, wrote more than 50 songs, the most famous being Bermuda is Another World and Yellow Bird. He rose from a prodigious nine-year-old ukulele-playing singer, captivating audiences at Bermuda’s legendary entertainment spots, to be founder and president at the time of his death, for 30 years of the Bermuda Musician and Entertainers Union

Our pictures show Dale Butler with the legends used in his play, along with the Masterpiece Band, led by Dexter Dillas and comprising Quinton ‘Tiny’ Burgess and saxophonist Jade Minors, with their special guest, Veronica ‘Lolly’ Minors. Other legends include Gene Steede, June Caisey, Stan ‘Lord Necktie’ Seymour, Duke Joell, Cleveland ’Outta Sight’ Simmons.

Cited for The Hubert Smith Memorial Award was young Marq Rodriguez Philip, the son of Dr Don and Margurita Philip.

Marq played the role of Henry in the Hubert Smith play held over seven nights at the Fourways Inn. He will receive his award at a special event October 27th. The $1,200 raised will assist him with his studies in Bollywood. Marq has already signed up to play the role of Andrew in Dale Butler’s next play The Second Last Supper to be performed March 25, 26, 27th at St Paul AME.

Marq is a teenaged grandson of mine. He graduated in June from the Berkeley Institute; just completed an internship with KPMG within its marketing Department, enhancing his skills in business, marketing, and production of film and graphics.

He represented Bermuda as a Youth Delegate in New York, where he was recognised as overall winner of its short film competition. Also he represented Bermuda at the Brave New Voices Poetry Festival in California 2012, Chicago 2013 and last year in Philadelphia

Also 2013 Marq represented Bermuda at the Caribbean Secondary School Drama Festival, where he was judged and awarded ‘Best Actor’ overall from nine Caribbean countries in the festival. Additionally he has had the honour of producing a self-made film Bermuda WAS Another World.

Butler’s play on Hubie was directed by Rotimi Martins, who is rarely publicly photographed, is above with an associate. And above are Dr. Connie Frith and actress Ruth Thomas, who were among the sold-out audience at Fourways.
