Loss of power means a hot shower or bath isn’t always possible after a storm, but having fresh breath and clean, well-hydrated skin can make a huge difference.

We asked three stylish ladies to share with us what goes into their hurricane beauty routine. Here’s what they said:

Juliana Franco, 19, student

What’s your beauty routine like during a storm? I always make sure I have lots of bottles of water on hand to wash my face because taking care of your skin is probably the best thing you can do at that time. If you have a clean face everything else looks better, even if you’re wearing pyjamas. Actually those are my favourite things to wear during a hurricane, either sweatpants or PJs, because they’re comfortable.

Describe your typical style? I’m pretty last-minute about my style and it all works out. If I went through my closet days before going out and had everything prepped I would still find something wrong with the outfit and end up swapping one thing for the next, so I just prefer to pick things out on the day.

Where do you get fashion motivation? Social media sites like Instagram or Pinterest. I like to be ‘out there’ and don’t like the same things as everyone else, but I still keep my style pretty basic.

What’s your beauty routine like during a storm? I love using baby wipes. They are my lifesaver. They help to take off make-up and also wash your face when you don’t have water. They’re also less greasy than traditional make-up wipes. I’d also probably have a little supply kit on hand with a few wipes, mascara and some travel-sized hygiene products, the same thing that would take with you on an aeroplane and have those handy at all times.

Describe your typical style? I’d call it comfortable and preppy. I chose comfort over style when applicable and the rest of the time I try to just look my best.

Where do you get fashion motivation? I like looking at what certain celebrities wear like Blake Lively and Jessica Alba. They are modern and preppy and always look really appropriate for what they’re doing.

What’s your beauty routine like during a storm? Well my regular routine isn’t usually that complicated. I still do my regular face washing routine, but simplify it. I don’t wear any kind of foundation or anything like that, I prefer a clean pallette after I wash up. But I might add lipgloss just to keep moisturised. I try and use baby wipes or cleansing wipes just to maintain my hygiene and if you do need to feel pretty just add a little eyeshadow or mascara, that shouldn’t hurt at all.

Describe your typical style? I guess my style is pretty classic. On a regular day I like to look kind of loungy, with minimal effort. But sometimes I do like to go all out and dress up if I go to a more formal event.

Where do you get fashion motivation? I do like to look at Cosmopolitan magazine, but mostly what I do now is go on Facebook or Instagram. I get motivation when I shop, but when I do that it’s usually overseas, especially because I’m tall (5ft 9in) and wear heels all the time.

A few more recommendations

When Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast of the US, Allure Magazine gave its recommendation for products to help get its readers through the disaster.

Here’s what was suggested:

1. Dry shampoo. These are great at giving hair a seemingly fresh look, sans water. Their favourite products were: Redken Powder Refresh Aerosol Hair Powder (for those who like a nice, clean scent) and BlowPro Faux Dry Dry Shampoo (which is compact and easy to transport).

2. Body wipes. Preferably something that can do double duty on your face and body is useful. Their favourites are: Yes to Carrots Soothing Hypoallergenic Facial Towelettes or Dr Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Smoothing Body Towels (if you have a specific skin concern like acne).

3. Toothbrushes. If you suspect it will be a while until your water at home can be used, there are miniature toothbrushes on the market that are convenient for travel and can help fight against cavities and bad breath. Colgate Wisps have a minty toothpaste built-in and they also serve as a toothpick for harder-to-reach places.
