Can you design a piano?
Feeling creative?
The Bermuda Society of Arts is offering a $1000 prize and a chance to tickle the ivories as part of its Public Piano Project.
Residents are being asked to come up with the best design for a piano, that will be placed outside City Hall over Christmas.
The winner gets a $1000 gift certificate from CellOne and the piano will be accessible to anyone to play.
The competition is based on Play Me, I’m Yours, an international project created by British artist Luke Jerram in 2007 and launched in Birmingham, UK that year.
Since then, 1,300 decorated pianos have been placed in 46 cities around the world, reaching more than six million people. Each piano has a sign on it saying: “Play Me, I’m Yours”.
A Bermuda house themed piano was part of the Toronto, Canada project in 2012.
“Public Piano Project will be an amazing piece of public art that will combine visual and performing art into a unique and interactive piece,” said BSoA president Charles Anderson. Added Joel Ferrier of CellOne: “To be part of an adaptation of a global initiative which brings everyone together for the upcoming holiday season is a wonderful way to celebrate the remainder of 2014, and ring in a new year.”
Applications for the competition can be found at www.bsoa.bm or collected from the gallery in City Hall.
All submissions are due by November 7 at 4pm.
The winner will have a month to paint his piano before it is launched in a musical performance on the steps of City Hall on December 12.
It will remain there until January 16.
