Star figure skater’s Bermuda wedding joy
Olympic figure skater Meagan Duhamel fell in love with the ice at three years old.
But it’s her figure skating coach Bruno Marcotte who stole her heart.
The two exchanged vows in an intimate ceremony at Stonehole Bay in Warwick last month.
It was the icing on top of an already sweet season for the 29-year-old.
Ms Duhamel and her skating partner Eric Radford won a world championship title last December — the first Canadian duo to accomplish such a feat since 2001.
Q: What made you decide to get married in Bermuda?
A: I had been to Bermuda a few times in the past, as well as to other locations in the Caribbean, but I found Bermuda [to be] unique, quiet and special compared to Mexico or Cuba. I thought it would be nice for my family and friends to visit this unique, remote Island, because it is not somewhere they probably would have gone to otherwise.
Q: What was your overall impression of the Island?
A: This was my third trip, and as my other trips, it was very nice. Good weather, good food and nice and helpful people.
Q: Did you get to do any sightseeing or activities while you were here?
A: I did one kayak adventure while in Bermuda, but didn’t have enough time for other activities! Just the wedding and nice meals with family and friends.
Q: When it came to your wedding day, what moment or memory do you think you’ll cherish most?
A: I think the wedding location was perfect. Stonehole Bay provided a stunning location and there was a soft wind, allowing the waves to crash onto the shore as we were having our ceremony. It was just like we were in a movie!
Q: What are you doing at the moment?
A: I am currently touring in Japan and then I will go back home to Montreal to prepare for the upcoming figure skating season.
Q: When and how did you and Bruno meet? Did you know instantly that there was something special about him?
A: I knew of Bruno many, many years ago, through figure skating, but our paths never crossed each other personally until 2007. We started dating in 2011. I wouldn’t say it was love at first sight though!
Q: What do you respect and admire most about him?
A: I respect Bruno’s passionate personality and willingness to help and understand everyone. I admire his patience, his work ethic and his loyalty.
Q: Do you think the coaching relationship will change at all now that he’s your husband?
A: Nothing will change with our professional relationship now. We lived like a married couple before, I doubt anything will change now. He is always fair and respectful of my skating and relationship with Eric.
