Progressive-rock band Sonique Sanctuary recently released a video for Dark Truth, a song from their debut album Resilience. The video was directed by Adrian Kawaley-Lathan of Rockfire Productions and styled by band member Tracey-Lynne Harney. Lifestyle met up with Dr Harney to find out what was involved.

What’s the album about?

The whole album is a journey of healing, of human resilience.

You styled the video. Where’d you get the design ideas, the clothes?

It all started with a vision I had. I wanted to distinguish between [the song’s] three layers — past, present and future. Basically I had a collection of things I’d never thrown out; a tickle trunk of my own possessions and wardrobe. So it’s all my clothes. For the present, the corporate insignia was the power sign. The CEO [in the video] paid homage to [BBC cult classic] The Prisoner. It’s all about freeing your mind. I had an old blazer with appropriate lapels and I piped it using silver duct tape. We had limited funds. The video was very low budget so we didn’t do any sewing. Everything was taped, tied, velcroed or pinned.

How long did it take to complete everything?

It was shot in one day although pre/post production was long. The clothing, it took probably about a week just to get the wardrobe together.

Do you follow fashion?

I’m not into fashion at all. I’m quite stuck in the 1990s really. For me what I like about attire is merely personal expression of it. I don’t care what trends are. It’s more about if I can find something that nails how I feel and how I want to present it. If I see someone dressed uniquely I celebrate that; that’s what I notice. I don’t think you have to spend huge amounts of money to express yourself when there’s so much DIY possible. We did a lot of shredding [for our past scenes]. We created tassels on old track pants and cut them to make them look tribal.

You used neon make-up for the future scenes. Where’d that idea come from?

I already had a vision for [our future scenes]. I love neon maker that’s black-light sensitive. I got the idea to use it from Skunk and Nancy, a British rock band with a mature black lady as its lead singer. In the late 1990s they made a video for a movie, Strange Days, with Ralph Fiennes and Angela Bassett.
