Fiyah Marshall is on a high.

The reggae artist toured the US East Coast with Sizzla this summer and is one of the stars of a planned television TV show, I’m Available Inc.

He hasn’t forgotten his roots — he took to the stage as part of the Made in Bermuda Festival this month.

“The Made In Bermuda Festival was a pleasure to perform at and celebrate some of the amazing talent this island produces,” Fiyah said.

“It was an exceptional evening and we were blessed by many great performers through the event.”

The 32-year-old studied theatre and international business at Miami’s Eckerd College under his given name, Alex. He was reborn as Fiyah when he started performing, “maybe ten years” ago.

“Fiyah actually is a name with a couple of meanings,” said the artist, who divides his time between Los Angeles and Bermuda.

“When you think of a fire marshall they usually are trying to tell you a club or party is too crowded, but my Fiyah Marshall is quite the opposite — think of good times and let the party get packed and turn up the vibes.

“I like to bring the Fiyah in my music. The atmosphere is to turn up the heat and turn up the Fiyah. If it’s a great event and I’m in the building then it’s Fiyah Marshall approved.”

His hope is to make his name known around the world. So when VAS Productions offered him the chance to tour with Jamaican reggae superstar Sizzla, he had to take it.

“I toured with Sizzla, Marlon Asher, Ras Shiloh, Orlando Octave and a bunch of people to promote their new album, Life of a Ghetto Youth,” he said.

“I was with them on the East Coast in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, for more than a month starting in June.

“I’ve been working with Marlon Asher and some of his people for years and one of my best friends in music, an executive producer, put on the tour and asked me to be one of the acts. It was good promotion for me. Life of a Ghetto Youth got to number 5 on iTunes’ reggae chart and number 11 on Billboard’s reggae chart.

“I love being around reggae legends, around influential and creative peers. It was a very uplifting experience and good to bring positivity to an important cause — those less fortunate.”

Still, he’s yet to put out an album. Blazin, his first, will soon be available from all digital retailers. The 20-track double album has a pre-order date of September 19 — the full album will be available on October 26. Jadakiss, Cassidy, Marlon Asher and Young Lace are among the featured artists.

“I meant to put out a debut album two years ago but I didn’t because I’m a bit of a perfectionist,” he said. “I recorded with Jadakiss and Cassidy and worked with a lot of multi-platinum producers on it.

“The whole thing in Bermuda is that we live in a small place and everything is imported but you hear the rest of the world. I like to take everything grown around me to hand, and mix it with reggae, dancehall, hip hop, soca — feel-good music that people can move to.”

Aside from that, he’s looking forward to staring his acting career. I’m Available Inc is still in the development phase with plans to run the show on a “major/premium on-demand television network” late next year.

“Last year, I did the official pre-party of the Latin Grammys in Las Vegas. The producer that I work with out there, Felix Cordova of 7 Lives Productions, cast me to be one of the stars of the show. It’s a scripted reality show about seven guys who have either had their 15 minutes of fame or are on the brink of it. Charlie Masso, who was with Ricky Martin in Menudo, is in it. We did a pilot for it last November in Miami and Mexico City and are set to resume shooting in the spring. Hopefully we will do an episode in Bermuda.

“It’s a scripted reality show with a comedic side to it. It was a little bit funny seeing myself on screen. You have to be a good sport about stuff, have to know how to laugh at yourself but it all marries well — my music, my acting.”

The success hasn’t come without struggle, he acknowledged.

“It’s a pretty exciting time,” he said. “I’m also in negotiations with a film company in New York to do a movie, Sex, Love & Film School. It starts shooting in November and will have a theatrical release around late 2018. But I network and I hustle hard. It’s important. You’ve got to get out there, make friends, put in the work.

“We also have our record label and film production company, Hot Fiyah Sounds Entertainment. Eventually I want to help develop the Bermuda industry. We need a platform to help educate and empower artists.”
