Freddie McGregor was “born a winner” — and he has the proof to back it up.

The legendary Jamaican singer’s career spans more than 50 years, and has earned him a place at the table of reggae’s elite.

Even at the age of 61, he shows no sign of letting up. His latest single Go Freddie Go is getting lots of love over the airwaves.

“It amazes me because when I think of myself, after 54 years, I still have a number one record,” McGregor told The Royal Gazette.

In addition to Born A Winner, his hits include Push Comes to Shove and Big Ship; Just Don’t Want To Be Lonely was a top ten hit in the UK.

Local fans will get the opportunity to see the singer perform live at the National Sports Centre on Mother’s Day, along with fellow legend Marcia Griffiths.

“I think it’s a perfect package and hope this is the biggest concert Bermuda will see for the rest of the year,” McGregor said. “I can tell you, Bermuda won’t be good after this concert.

“Me and Marcia have years of music together, so Bermuda will definitely get all the music and more than they would have wanted.

“Bermuda is a music-loving people and we are going to lively up the place.”

McGregor started recording when he was 7 with a Jamaican ska group, The Clarendonians. Bermuda holds a special place in his heart.

“We have done many events there and Bermuda is always live,” he said.

“It’s always a live place for music and the Bermudian people love our music so we always have fun when we get together there.

“I haven’t been there in a long time and I think it’s perfect that me and Marcia are coming through this time and we are looking forward to that so much.”

He anticipates his visit won’t be only about business.

“Usually when I go to Bermuda it’s a time that I get to enjoy myself and the first thing I do is pick up a bike and a helmet and go for a ride,” he said.

“Bermuda is so beautiful and I always admire the houses with the white roofs and the water storage underneath. It’s truly unique and I love it. We just enjoy the place as much as we can. We also have so many friends in Bermuda.”
