Lacking diversity but terrific entertainment

Great show: The cast at Daylesford Theatre (Photograph by Kevin MacDonald)

Lovers of Broadway packed Daylesford Theatre on Friday, eager to see The World Goes ’Round, the musical revue put on by Bermuda Musical & Dramatic Society.

Songs by legendary duo John Kander and Fred Ebb were performed to the delight of the audience by Emma Muggleton, Heidi Oberholzer, Karen Stroeder, Paige Hallett, Lindsey Steinhoff and Jenn Campbell.

Some of the tunes, such as Maybe This Time from Cabaret, were a little moody, but there were plenty of humorous songs including The Grass is Always Greener from Woman of the Year, to keep the energy level high.

An audience favourite was Sara Lee, a song about a woman’s obsession with frozen cake from The Act.

There were giggles all around at the lyrics: “Sara Lee, Sara Lee, your brioche just fractures me; Give me a taste of your cherry Danish; I love my mother but you can’t compare, not with Sara Lee.”

Another crowd-pleaser was Arthur in the Afternoon, about a housewife entertaining herself with a love affair.

Lindsey Steinhoff, whose BMDS debut came in 2016 as the princess in Adventures in Pantoland, really outdid herself with this one. Not only was she a fantastic singer, but also a great dancer. She had all the moves.

BMDS newcomer Heidi Oberholzer was another standout. She captivated the audience with her renditions of The World Goes ’Round and Sometimes A Day Goes By. Hopefully, we’ll see more of her in future productions.

First-time director Paige Hallett did a fantastic job. The performance was also a terrific showcase of the performers’ chemistry; the evening was a lot of fun and well worth the ticket price.

My only complaint would be a general lack of diversity in the cast. The five women in the show were all white and, in this day and age, audiences are looking for a wider range of ethnic and racial representation.

• The World Goes ‘Round runs until Thursday. Showtime is 8pm. Tickets, $35, are available at www.ptix.bm or from the box office an hour before the show. For more information call 292-0848 or visit www.bmds.bm
