Book ship Logos II set to arrive today

Coming back: The book ship Logos II is due to dock in Hamilton today with a "Barnes & Noble"-size shipment of books.

From today through March 2, the UK-based charity book vessel MV Logos II will be anchored in Bermuda to spread its message of knowledge, help, hope and its massive book selection.

Logos II is one of three ships operated by OM International and carries a crew of 60 volunteers, representing more than 20 nationalities, living and working on board.

The ship operates as a nonprofit Christian charity and sails internationally.

While berthed on Front Street, Hamilton, visitors are welcome on board the vessel to explore its popular and extensive book shop and International Café. Entrance is free and all are welcomed.

The ship's hours of operation are: Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Logos II has thanked the Corporation of Hamilton for its assistance as well as the Bermuda Government.

Each volunteer crew member, including the captain and officers, are financially sponsored by friends and family, receiving no pay during their time on board.

In more than 38 years of international service Logos II and her sister ships, Logos and Doulos, have visited more than 145 countries, called in some 1,100 port cities, provided more than 178 million books and warmly welcomed 36 million visitors on board.

The ship carries an extensive book shop, carrying more than 5,000 titles, with stock of more than one million.

The titles include selections of cookery, hobbies, children's titles, science, sports, dictionaries, Christian living and Bibles.

Whether suffering from a severe shortage of good literature or privileged with quality books, every country visited by Logos II has benefited from its discounted prices and vast selection.

The Logos II last visited Bermuda two years ago over Christmas. That visit sparked unhappiness from local book stores, who felt the ship provided unfair competition at the busiest shopping time of the year.
