Breaking News: House fire death "suspicious"
Police say the death of a man in a fire at an abandoned house is being treated as suspicious — and they can’t rule out that the victim might be missing 55-year-old St. Claire McDonald Augustus.
In a press release this afternoon, a spokesman said: “Following an autopsy by an overseas forensic pathologist, the Bermuda Police Service can confirm that the death of an individual discovered inside a derelict Washington Street North, Pembroke residence that caught fire early Monday morning is being treated as suspicious.
“Police can also confirm that the deceased individual is not missing French national 30-year-old Mehdi David Yahi or missing local teenager (16-year-old) Travis Malcolm Lowe. However, Police are unable to confirm if the deceased individual is missing 55-year-old St. Claire McDonald Augustus, who was last seen over a month ago.
“Inquiries are continuing to establish the identity of the deceased by a team of investigators from the Serious Crime Unit led by Acting Chief Inspector Jerome Laws and Inspector Steven Lightbourne.”
The spokesman appealed for anyone who may have attended the scene prior to the Police and fire services, to get in touch. They are also keen to hear from anyone who was in the area of Washington Street North in the early hours of Monday or may have been at the scene while the fire was being extinguished.
