Electric car sparks interest

Electric Car Company Directors Dennis Lister and Lloyd Telford and Premier Paula Cox unveil one of three new battery-powered cars recently.

A new battery-powered Island E-Car has generated a wave of interest, according to entrepreneur Dennis Lister. The Island’s first commercially available electric car was unveiled last month by Mr Lister, with partners Lloyd Telford and David Greene.Mr Lister said: “We bought this car in for the holiday period so that people could get a chance to sit around the table and talk about it. The response has been overwhelming. We’ve had people calling all three of us with questions, wanting to see it, asking for test drives.”He said many people have been surprised that the E-Car is “a real live car, that it performs and handles like a car”.“There have been too many queries to give an exact number but I can certainly say it’s been very well received.”Specially designed for Bermuda by the Electric Car Co, the Island E-Car costs $24,000 and can be recharged from a wall outlet. The car, which can reach speeds of 60mph, comes with a number of standard features including air conditioning, heater, power steering, electric front windows and key entry. It takes six to eight hours to recharge when plugged into a 110-volt outlet or under four hours with a 220-volt quick charger, with a three to four-year battery life (an average of 30 miles per day) and a replacement battery costing approximately $1,800.
