Haiti's resilience impresses Burch
National Security Minister David Burch has spoken of his awe at the Haitian people’s resilience and strength.The nation yesterday observed the first anniversary of the devastating 7.0 earthquake that struck there.The Government Senate leader said he had been following the story of the Caribbean nation and its people since the tragedy unfolded on January 12.The earthquake lasted 35 seconds. It left more than 220,000 dead, over 300,000 injured, and more than one million homeless.It is believed to have destroyed 60 percent of government infrastructure in the Caribbean nation and caused more than 180,000 homes to be uninhabitable.Sen Burch said: “I have been following the story of the Haitian people since the tragic events of January 12. Haiti is still suffering as a country and as a people. There have been cholera outbreaks, political infighting and natural disasters such as hurricanes and flooding.“Yet through all of their tribulations, there is a resilience and a strength among the people that is truly amazing. And despite their unspeakable hardships, they continue to persevere.“So today I wanted to express my support for the nation and its people and it’s my hope is that other residents will also join me and take a moment out of their day to remember Haiti.”After the quake the Island banned together to provide more than $1 million in aid for the country. Government assisted by paying for a commercial plane loaded with medical supplies, food and water to be taken to the region soon after the event.In March, Government also joined forces with the West Indian Association to host the ‘To Haiti With Love’ telethon.In three hours the telethon, which featured local talent, raised more than $83,000 for Bermuda charities working in the region.Donations continued pouring in after the event, bringing the grand total to just over $94,000.The funds went to Caricom Disaster Emergency Management Agency, the Salvation Army, Philip Rego’s Feed My Lambs and Haiti Health Village.
