'Strong' Bermuda insurance market faces big challenges

Bermuda’s reinsurance market remains strong, with 2010 results expected to be favourable, capping five consecutive years of operating success since the significant losses in 2005 due to Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma.That is the view of Fitch Ratings, which published a report on the Island’s reinsurance marketplace today.However, Fitch sees insurers’ top lines being hit by an increasingly competitive market, as insurers cede less business and insurance exposures weaken during difficult economic conditions.The reducing demand will add to the market’s excess capacity and further intensify the competitive landscape, Fitch added.Read more in tomorrow’s Business section.
