'Tremendous progress' with recruits - Regiment

Regiment recruits get weapons training during Recruit Camp.

Bermuda Regiment recruits will fire live ammunition tomorrow in Southampton and Warwick.Today marks the fifth day of Recruit Camp; 196 new soldiers are participating.Bermuda Regiment spokesman Capt Christopher Gauntlett said the recruits are responding well to their drills.“The daily routine and lessons are moving along and tremendous progress has been made,” he said. “On the drill square they have learned to march as one, and already can respond sharply to commands such as ‘Salute to the Front', ‘About Turn', or ‘Eyes Right'. Their first real test on the drill square will be this Saturday's Inter-Section Drill Competition.“By the end of Thursday evening, the recruits will have concluded five days of weapons lessons. They will then be required to pass a Weapon Handling Test, where they will have to demonstrate their proficiency in the safe handling of the Mini Ruger 14, before being permitted to fire on the Camp and Beach ranges.”The regiment advised they will fire both live and blank munitions in the South Shore Park, Warwick area, and Morgan's Point Annex in Southampton starting tomorrow. The practice sessions will continue until January 28 between 7.30am and 6pm.The public should stay clear of these areas.
