May 24 events to conclude at Bernard Park

The ongoing development of the National Sports Centre in Prospect, Devonshire, means that the annual Bermuda Day events on May 24 will this year conclude at its former venue, Bernard Park in Hamilton, instead. The return to this venue means that the Annual Marathon Derby route will also revert to its former course from Front Street, heading along Church Street, King Street, Victoria Street and Cedar Avenue and Marsh Folly to finish at Bernard Park.

The Bermuda Day Parade route will start on Front Street in front of the Bank of Bermuda and proceed via Court Street, Cedar Avenue, Palmetto Road and Dutton Avenue to the park.

Announcing the news yesterday, the Ministry of Community Affairs and Sport said that all organisations concerned in the Bermuda Day celebrations have been informed by letter.

Horton confident talks will avert strike

Minister of Labour Randolph Horton has expressed confidence that mediation talks will resolve a dispute that has lead Belco workers to threaten a strike. The Electricity Supply Union, which represents around 200 of the 350-plus staff at Belco, has threatened a walk-out at the end of the month after failing to reach an agreement with bosses over wage scales and reclassifications.

Negotiators from the union have been in mediation talks since last Thursday with company bosses and a Labour Relations Officer.

Mr. Horton said of he did not expect the ongoing discussions to continue for much longer, saying: "I've been advised that there has been pleasing progress. The Labour Relations Officer will do a good enough job. The parties concerned don't want a strike."

A spokeswoman for Belco declined to comment.

Thief steals $200 from Pembroke home

A burglar stole $200 from a Brooklyn Lane, Pembroke, home between 8.30 and 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday.
