Breaking News: Auditor General accuses Govt of restricting access to information

Auditor General Heather Jacobs Matthews today said the Ministry of Finance has restricted her access to Government financial information despite repeated requests.

Mrs. Jacobs Matthews’ office released a statement this morning describing the move as unconstitutional.

“This restriction represents interference with the work of the Auditor General and limits our ability to provide Parliament and the people of Bermuda with the information that they have a right to know on a timely basis,” the office stated in a press release.

The statement added that, according to the constitution, the Auditor General is allowed access to all books, records, and other documents relating to all accounts that she is mandated to audit.

This includes the Financial Information Management System, which it has been denied access to over the past two weeks, it stated.

A spokesperson for the Ministry released a statement this morning, in response to the Auditor, saying: “The Ministry of Finance can confirm today that the Auditor General has been granted access to the Government accounting system.”
