Cyclists face steep fines

Cyclists may be charged with driving without due care and attention if caught riding a motorcycle and talking on a cellphone. They could find themselves dipping in their wallets to pay the maximum fine of $1,000 and/or six months off the road for the offence. Police have noticed an increasing number of people riding motorcycles with cellphones lodged in the side of their helmets. They have advised the public not to do this because it could result in an accident.

Roof damage to be repaired

Construction on the machine shop building of the Department of Marine and Ports located on East Broadway will close off the car park area while repairs are made.

As of Monday vehicle traffic from East Broadway will not be allowed into the Marine and Ports car park but pedestrians will be able to access the department by the flagpole that is located on East Broadway.

Construction will commence due to roof damage sustained during Hurricane Fabian and is anticipated to continue until the end of April.

The Department of Marine and Ports apologises for any inconvenience the construction may cause the public.

Safety pamphlets from Shell

Shell has provided 3,500 information pamphlets on how motorists can drive safely with children.

Shell Oil products manager, David Rose, said: “We are particularly aware of the importance of proper child safety and the use of correct and proper child safety restraints when it comes to driving, so when we saw that Shell had these informational pamphlets, we jumped at the chance to provide them to the Bermuda driving public that have children.

“We fully support the Road Safety Council and felt that this was just one way in which we could demonstrate our tangible commitment to the programme.”

The pamphlets are available from Shell service stations.
